Pecka Visitor Center
The Pecka Visitor Center is housed in a former village elementary school, which operated from its opening in 1931 until 1985.
The center serves multiple purposes, with the guiding idea being to provide visitors with information about attractions and reliably high-quality products, while offering locals a channel for marketing their quality goods. Managed by Greenways, an association supporting sustainable development, the completely renovated old school building is a result of extensive effort and several projects of the association’s members. In addition to managing the center, Greenways works on establishing themed trails in the area, looking after the sources of the Sana river, developing agricultural production and promoting the entire region.
The center is the starting and return point for excursions, climbing, cycling, hiking through the highlands of Krajina, meetings with guides, and more. One of the most important aspects of the center’s activities is organizing nature schools for preschool and elementary children. These programs allow children to directly interact with nature, raising their awareness about nature conservation and the importance of organic food production and consumption. The center provides adequate infrastructure, parking spaces for visitors and hospitality services.
Balkana
The Balkan Tourist and Recreational Center is nestled within the embrace of Mount Lisina. Located 4km from Mrkonjic Grad and 58 km from Banja Luka, it lies along the main Jajce-Mrkonjic Grad-Bihac road.
Two oval artificial lakes at an altitude of 750 meters, along with their surroundings are ideal for swimming and fishing during the summer. The lakes were built in the 1970s and are fed by the mountain streams Cjepalo and Skakavac, as well as springs beneath the Great Lake.
Several legends have been preserved about the lake’s origin. According to one tale, there were two powerful and deep springs full of fish in this area. Since fish is called “baluk” in Turkish, the springs were named “Balukhana” (fish dwelling). Over time, the name changed to Balkan. The slopes of Mount Lisina are suitable for walking and hiking, with an arranged ski slope within the TRC premises.
