Kotor Varos

Welcome to Kotor Varos

Kotor Varos is located in the central part of the Republic of Srpska and represents a predominantly mountainous area surrounded by the mountain ranges of Uzlomac, Borja, Vlasic and the slopes of Cemernica.

Historical records indicate that settlements existed in this region even in ancient times, including the Neolithic period. During that era, the area was inhabited by the Illyrians.

Since 1519, the medieval town of Kotor has been under Ottoman rule. At that time, alongside the settlement of Kotor, a new settlement named Varos was established in the area of today’s Donji Varos. The expansion of the town in both directions led to the creation of a town that retained both names – Kotor Varos.

Nature

This region has a rich variety of flora and fauna, along with abundant water resources, dominated by the Vrbanja river and its tributaries, as well as waterfalls such as Vilenjska Vrela and Skakavac. The landscape is fulfilled by the mountains Uzlomac, Borja and Vlasic.

A unique feature of the area is the “Yellow Beech,” a tree with distinctly yellow leaves from budding in spring to falling in autumn. This rare specimen is estimated to be around 300 years old and is considered unique in Europe.

Culture

From the medieval period, the remains of the old Kotor fortress can be found in Kotor Varos. The fortress is situated above the left bank of the Vrbanja river above the Bobas river, as it is sometimes called.

A legend linked to Hrvoje Vukcic Hrvatinic claims that he once leaped on his black horse from Ravni Cepak to the Bobas fortress, leaving a horse hoof imprint in the hard rock as evidence.

Kotor was a significant fortress within the Jajce Banate, guarding the approach to Jajce from the northwest. Since 1519, the medieval town of Kotor has been under Ottoman control. According to tradition, the Kotor fortress is said to contain underground dungeons and a network of underground passages. Unfortunately, these claims are yet to be confirmed through archaeological research.

Adventure

If you’re a fan of canyoning in breathtaking natural surroundings, you’ve come to the right place. Visiting one of the waterfalls and springs in an area rich with cascades, natural slides and steep cliffs will spark a rush of adrenaline and satisfy even the most demanding adventurers.

For a calmer activity, we recommend fishing on Vrbanja river. This mountain river is brimming with noble fish, particularly brown trout.

Gastro

This area belongs to the Krajina region, known for its diverse cuisine and traditional specialties. Thanks to its rich river flows and forested areas abundant with wild animals the region boasts delicious fish dishes and game specialties. You can taste authentic local dishes during the traditional event “Evening of Homemade Cuisine,” held in the summer. This festival brings together many participants, showcasing folklore performances, competitions and the homemade crafts of the region, offering a true flavor of the local culture.

Cvrcka river canyon

The mountain river Cvrcka originates beneath the Cemernica mountain in Knezevo municipality and flows into Vrbanja river near Kotor Varos. The canyon is abundant with natural beauty and numerous cascades, whirlpools, waterfalls and caves.

Along the marked mountaineering trail, you can see the stunning Skakavac waterfall in the village of Hrvacani, the Male and Female whirlpools, Bekica Zelenac – a popular swimming spot for the brave, Opaki whirlpool, Vilenjska Vrela waterfall and many other attractions.

The Cvrcka valley is ideal for hiking, as a trail runs along the entire canyon, offering a view of picturesque landscapes and authentic watermills. The scenes appear almost surreal.

Members of the “Vilenjska Vrla” Mountaineering Association have initiated efforts to designate the Cvrcka River Canyon as a protected area.

Skakavac Waterfall

Surrounded by mountain peaks of Jezica and Golo Brdo lies the canyon of the small mountain river Duboka, which forms spectacular waterfalls in several places. The largest and most famous of these is Skakavac.

The sight of the water cascading from a height of about 20 meters is rarely seen in this region. To allow tourists, hikers, and travelers to enjoy it, local environmentalists and mountaineers have arranged access to the waterfall.  A unique experience awaits at Skakavac in winter, when the entire waterfall freezes. The sound of water can still be heard inside, while the pool into which it falls is entirely frozen. Large icicles create a breathtaking image.

The Church of St. Nicholas – Borci

It was built between 1920 and 1925 on the foundations of a smaller wooden church. The church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas and was consecrated by Metropolitan Vasilije of Banja Luka. During World War II, the church was partially damaged during an attack on the village of Broci. It underwent significant restoration from 2000 to 2004.

Stecak necropolis in Vecici

Vecici is located about 10km southeast of Kotor Varos, on the southeastern edge of Veliko Polje. Veliko Polje is a plateau between Osmak and Cemernica to the west and Uzlomac and Borja to the east. Vrbanja river flows partially through it.

The necropolis with Stecak stones is situated on the Trzan hill, also known as the Crkviste locality. There are 3 turbe tombstones in total. In the same area, between Kotor Varos and Vecici lies the medieval town of Kotor, nestled in the hills along the Vrbanja valley. Given its position, proximity to the medieval town of Kotor and the presence of the largest necropolis with Stecak stones in the area, along with Ottoman-era cultural buildings, the settlement in Vecici stands out as an ancient medieval settlement and a place of worship since the ancient times. The toponym Trzan (Trzna) is of Old Slavic origin.
