Orjen

Orjen, a mountain in the southern part of Republic of Srpska, stretches approximately 25 kilometers in the area east of Trebinje, near the border with Montenegro and northwest of Risan. It features six peaks exceeding 1800 meters, with Veliki Kabo as the highest at 1894 meters. Velika Jastrebica, standing at 1864 meters, is the tallest peak within Republic of Srpska.

Interesting facts

The Nature Park boasts a dense network of marked trails ranging from easy walks to challenging routes suited for experienced mountaineers. However, Orjen is not a destination for those seeking effortless access to mountain beauty. In addition to hiking and mountaineering, the park can be explored through mountain biking along historic Austro-Hungarian carriage roads or current gravel paths leading to the region’s former katuns (shepherd’s huts).

Interesting facts

In 2020, the Government of Republic of Srpska declared “Orjen Nature Park”, designating Orjen and Bijela Gora in the Trebinje municipality as a Category V protected landscape. This decision aims to preserve nature while establishing harmonious relationships between conservation efforts and people’s activities.

Orjen is recognized as an ideal destination for active vacation, offering opportunities for nature excursions, hiking, mountaineering and speleological activities such as cave and pit exploration. The speleological association “Zelena Brda” organizes tours for groups of up to ten people. Additionally, the mountaineering association “Vuciji Zub” is responsible for coordinating active vacation programs and activities on this mountain.
