Zelengora

Zelengora is often hailed as the most beautiful mountain in the region, vast and spacious, decorated with forests and lush green pastures. Its central plateau is punctuated by striking peaks such as Vilinjak, Bregoc (2,014 m), Stog, Orlovac, Planinica, Klek, Ugljesin Vrh and many others. Unlike the rugged Maglic and Volujak, separated from it by the deep canyon of the Sutjeska River, Zelengora is tame and gentle. It is abundant in healing herbs, wild berries, wildlife, forests, grazing meadows, springs, streams, and most famously, mountain lakes known as the “mountain eyes” – Orlovacko lake, Gornje Bare lake, Donje Bare lake, Borilovacko lake, Stirinsko lake, Kotlanicko lake and Crno lake.

Scattered around its expansive meadows and pastures are shepherds’ huts, known as katuns, which serve as seasonal settlements during the summer months. From May to September, herds of sheep, goats and cattle graze on Zelengora’s pastures under the care of shepherds and their dogs.

Situated within the Sutjeska National Park, Zelengora has historically been a hub of nomadic cattle breeding and dairy production. Evidence of this legacy is found in names of places, medieval Stecak tombstones and traditional methods of milk processing. The area’s tame terrain makes it an ideal destination for families, offering a peaceful retreat far from urban noise. Zelengora is not particularly demanding for hikers, making it accessible even for those with moderate fitness levels.

Visitors can enjoy activities such as hiking, leisurely walks, cycling on marked trails, swimming in the crystal clear lakes and gathering medicinal herbs, berries or mushrooms. These experiences rejuvenate both body and spirit, providing a sanctuary for those seeking inner peace.
