Culture

Prijedor is a city with a rich tradition of artistic creativity and cultural heritage, which has determined the city’s modern development in this area. When the Serbian Singing Society “Vila” was founded in the distant 1895, few suspected that this embryo would later develop into theatrical and musical activity on whose foundations the Prijedor Theater, the Music School and the choirs of the “Mladen Stojanović” Cultural and Artistic Society and the “Vila” Singing Society would grow.

Pero Popović and Todor Švrakić, the first educated painters in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and as participants in the first art exhibition in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the distant 1907, started a tradition that has not been interrupted to this day, and because of which Prijedor is rightly called the city of painters. Over the years of development, these forms have been refined and developed, so that Prijedor has today become a regional center, not only of fine arts, but also of theater, literature and music.

In the “Kozara” National Park, at the Pilanište locality, there is a chapel dedicated to the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The chapel was built in 1903 on a hill above the then sawmill. When the chapel was built, the locals called it Mehmed’s church, because, according to legend, it was a silent testimony of a forbidden love between Marija, the daughter of the Austrian entrepreneur Karl Šmucera, and Mehmed Kulašić from Kozarac, who worked for Šmucer at the sawmill.

14 km from Mrakovica is the Moštanica monastery, which is mentioned for the first time in books in the distant 1579. Next to the monastery church is buried Petar Pecija Petrović, the leader of the national uprising against the Turks.

The tradition and folklore of the people of Kozarac – the characteristic song “ojkača”, folk customs, cuisine and other things, are kept from oblivion in the villages below Kozara.

In Prijedor, which is known as the city of painters, the tradition of mural painting is coming to life. Prijedor is unique in Southeast Europe for the idea that came from the Association of Fine Artists of this city. Since 2013, the international competition “Prijedor, City of Murals” has been held every year, and this city on the Sana is enriched every year with a new mural – a new interesting artistic story.
