Welcome to Brod
In the heart of Posavina, on the right bank of the Sava River lies the municipality of Brod. The 19th century marked the beginning of its cultural, industrial, commercial and transportation development, with the railway station building from this period standing as the postcard of the town. Besides agriculture and industry, Brod’s growth today continues to rely on trade, benefiting from its proximity to major routes.
Culture
The historical origins of the first settlements in the Brod municipality trace far back into the past. As early as 18 000 years ago in the dawn of civilization, the first human settlements appeared in the area between Vucjak and Sava River. The oldest evidence was discovered at Kadar, between Brusnica and Svilaj, though significant traces of civilization were also found in Grk, Podnovlje, Derventa, Bijelo Brdo and Klakar – most notably a Roman fort shaped like a quadrangular tower. During the 20th century, archaeologists discovered numerous stone and bone remains from the “hunter culture” on the territory of Brod municipality.
The town of Brod itself has several examples of old architecture, a park, as well as religious and sports objects.
The old railway station and the Gallery building have unique architecture. These buildings are complemented by the nearby City Park and Dusko Trifunovic Promenade.
The Orthodox Church of the Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God was built in 2009 on the foundations of a former wooden church and the other church constructed in 1894. The Catholic Church of St. Elijah was completed in 2006 on the location of earlier churches from 1860 and 1907. The Husejnija Mosque, originally constructed in the 18th century was reconstructed in 1909 and renovated again in 2013.
In Donji Klakar, 20km from the center of Brod, lies the Chapel of the Holy Martyr Paraskeva-Petka of Trnava, situated at the Dubokovac spring. Prayer gatherings have been held there since 1994. Chapel construction beginning in 2005. Each year, on August 8th a grand church and community gathering is held there to honor the feast day of this saint.
Nature
The natural goods of Brod include the rivers Sava and Ukrina, Obodni canal and the Vucjak area.
River Sava spans 29 kilometers within the municipality. Abundant with fish, it offers fishing trails and fishing huts along its banks. The river provides excellent conditions for water sports and recreation, including swimming, kayaking and canoeing. Along Sava is the “Poloj” getaway located 3km from the town center. The Sava River also offers great potential for the development of nautical tourism and water sports. Due to its navigability, the river as is highly important for transportation.
Ukrina River is suitable for fishing and is famous for the phenomenon of the “water flower” and the unique Ukrina ebonies. Its river bed is a natural reserve and habitat for numerous plant and animal communities.
Vucjak is a hilly region with its highest peaks Maksim-skok (368m) and Lipa (351m), offering beautiful views. The hills are covered with beech, oak and hornbeam forests and are ideal for hunting, hiking and cycling. The getaways “Sedam Vukova” (Seven Wolves) and “Dubokovac” are suitable for excursions, recreation and rest. Vucjak is part of the “Vucjak” hunting grounds.
The villages of Brod are scattered across Ivanjsko Field and the slopes of Vucjak and Motajica. They offer many cultural and natural attractions and are suitable for leisure, sports activities and recreation.
