Modrica

Welcome to Modrica

The municipality of Modrica is located in the north of Republic of Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina, covering an area of 297 km². The town itself is situated on the right bank of the Bosna river, about 20km from its confluence to Sava river. Modrica is notably abundant with fertile land and small water streams, with agriculture being the most prominent economic sector in the municipality.

Culture

Archaeological research in the Bosna river valley has uncovered traces of prehistoric people at numerous sites (Gradina and Dugo Polje).

Based on the current archaeological data, the earliest farmers in the municipality existed during the Middle and Late Neolithic periods. Much later (around 4500 years ago), the foundations of the first settlement were established on Dobor Hill.

The name Modrica was first mentioned in 1244 in a charter by the Hungarian King Bela IV.
On the northern edge of the Duga Njiva plateau lie the preserved foundations of the Gradac fortress. Fragments of locally made pottery from the mature Middle Ages indicate that the fortress was manned from the 13th to the first half of the 16th century. Its original name is unknown, but the locals refer to it as Gradac.

One of the most representative cultural and historical landmarks in the Modrica municipality is the old town of Dobor, with its Dobor Tower. It is located along the left bank of the Bosna river, about 4km upstream from Modrica.

Nature

Modrica has a rare natural heritage, combining joint mountainous and lowland landscapes. On one side are the slopes of the Balkan Dinaric Alps, represented by the mountainous terrains of Trebava and Vucijak, and on the other side is the Pannonian Plain, or the Posavina lowlands.
The presence of small and large watercourses abundant with fish and river crabs offers opportunities for the development of fishing tourism. Fishing potential includes the Bosna river, the lakes in Modricki Lug and various hill rivers.

Adventure

For adventure and recreation enthusiasts, Duga Njiva getaway is a must-visit. It is ideal for camping, picnics, hiking, cycling, collecting medicinal herbs, hunting and fishing.

Old Town Dobor

The medieval fortress of Dobor is situated on the left bank of the Bosna River, about 4km upstream from Modrica. Due to its strategically significant location, the fortified town of Dobor was frequently ravaged and conquered throughout history. It once served to control the Bosna river gorge, leading into Posavina.

The fortress was built in the 14th century by Ban Ivanis Horvat and was later governed by the Slavonian noble family Berislavic at the end of the 15th and early 16th century. It fell under the Ottoman rule in 1536 and Austrian rule in 1716. Following the Treaty of Pozarevac in 1718, it was returned to the Ottomans. The fortress originally consisted of two towers connected by two walls. It underwent reconstruction after World War II. However, during the recent conflicts, the fortress sustained damage which required restoration. Dobor’s value lies in its prominent late medieval defensive architecture. Its most distinctive features today include two towers, a courtyard and a wall facing the Bosna river. The first tower is an irregular cylinder with a base diameter of about 10 meters and an external height of approximately 18 meters. The second tower is letter D shaped, with a base diameter of about 6 meters and a height of around 19 meters.

Duga Njiva Getaway

Located in the heart of Trebava Mountain, between rivers Spreca and Bosna and the slopes of Majevica, Duga Njiva is 20km away from Modriča. This natural resource and picnic area on Trebava is abundant with deciduous and coniferous forests, unspoiled springs of drinking water, diverse flora and fauna and constant air currents that provide a natural cooling effect, ensuring clean air. The lush vegetation enhances the air quality, giving it the properties of a natural aerosol. During the summer, Duga Njiva is ideal for camping, picnics, hiking, cycling, herb gathering, hunting and fishing.

Sport-recreation center “Rijecani”

A must-visit recreational spot is the “Rijecani-Modriča” Humanitarian Organizations Center, which serves as a sports and recreational center located in one of the most picturesque parts of Duga Njiva, in the village of Rijecani Gornji, 12km away from Modrica. This ecologically preserved natural setting is perfect for summer and winter recreational activities alike.
