Visegrad Spa

Visegrad Spa

Located just five kilometers north of Visegrad, nestled in a dense pine forest at an altitude of 414 meters, Visegrad Spa (Banja) is a gem of natural beauty and human craftsmanship.

The spa is named after the delicate fern maidenhair (Adiantum), one of the rare continental sites of which is found near its thermal spring.

The origins of Visegrad Spa are closely tied to the construction of the Sokollu Mehmed Pasha Bridge in 1571. During the extraction of travertine stone used to build the bridge, a hot mineral spring was discovered at the site of today’s spa. In 1575, two thermal baths were constructed: Kadija’s Bath (Lower Bath) and Sokollu’s Bath (Upper Bath). Both have retained their original appearance and features to this day, marking nearly 500 years of therapeutic use of the spa’s waters.

Water
The thermal waters of Visegrad Spa are characterized as radioactive carbonate homeothermic, with a temperature of 34°C. Their therapeutic properties derive from radioactivity, primarily radon and its decay products. Visegrad Spa ranks first in Bosnia and Herzegovina and second in the former Yugoslavia for water radioactivity. The level of radiation is therapeutically optimal, without risks of accumulation or adverse effects. The healing water is used for bathing in tubs, pools, hydro-massage and even for drinking.
